When We Believed In Mermaids – Barbara O’Neal

4 stars

When We Believed In Mermaids was a Kindle Unlimited pick and those books are always hit or miss as they aren’t usually your newly released, bestseller-type books. However, after seeing a 4.2 rating with nearly 52,000 reviews on Goodreads I decided to give it a go! I am so glad I did because this book truly was a pleasant surprise.

What I thought was going to be a thriller turned out to be so much deeper and touching. Kit’s sister Josie has been missing for 15 years and is presumed dead. She was on a train in Europe when a terrorist attack occurred that demolished everything and everyone. Or so Josie’s family thought. Fast forward over a decade later and while on her break in the hospital ER where she is a doctor, Kit sees Josie’s face flash across a news broadcast of a deadly fire in New Zealand.

Determined to find out the truth and if she really did see her dead sister on national news, Kit flies from her home in California to New Zealand on a whim. Unsure of what she will find, if anything, Kit is not prepared for the realizations and discoveries she will embark upon during her trip. When We Believed In Mermaids is packed with emotion. If I start getting into details, I’m going to ruin it and spoilers will slip. I know this isn’t the most in-depth or amazing review of a book, but there’s so much going on that I feel it’s best to read this for yourself. Some parts of the book drug on a bit longer than my liking but the last fourth of the story really picked up and made this a solid 4 star read for me.

I was very invested in this story and the characters. They had pasts, they made mistakes, they were flawed. They were people like each of us, simply trying to get by in life despite heartache, grief, and tainted memories. This book had it all; a love story sprinkled in, difficult realizations, forgiveness, and starting fresh when it’s most difficult. When We Believed In Mermaids tells the ultimate story of the bond between two sisters and shows that no matter the distance, time or difficult situation, you can never truly break that bond.

If you are an Amazon Kindle Unlimited member, this book is FREE – so please, go download this book and sink your teeth into this fabulous story!
